The Church of the Maw of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, is one of the last remnants of a much larger organization, the Cult of the Maw.
The Cult, which dated from the 1300s, has been stamped out nearly everywhere, almost going extinct in the 1800s, but the Church still keeps to the old ways.
The Cult, and therefore the Church, worships a god of eternal hunger. It is referred to by many names, such as Gog Magog, the Void, Huitzilopochtli, or the Wrathful Christ. Many of the names used are corrupt, mistaken, or deliberate lies. Nowadays, however, most of the members of the Church simply call it the Maw.
The Cult's official (outer) doctrine is that the Maw must be regularly fed innocents or else it will devour the world. They technically seek to appease the Maw, not worship it.
However, the clergy know that instead, the more the Maw is fed, the more its arrival is hastened! When the Maw comes, the clergy of the Church will have dominion over all the yet-to-be-eaten parts of the world, and will be devoured last.
